Julius Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, said, “Arbor Day is not like other holidays. Each of those reposes on the past, while Arbor Day proposes for the future.” The newspaper editor and politician declared the first Arbor Day in Nebraska in 1872 to encourage the planting of trees. The holiday has grown to be celebrated worldwide, and reminds us of the beauty and purpose of trees. And the connection to the western suburbs? Morton’s son, Joy Morton, founded The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, which continues the celebration of trees through research, education and by creating a beautiful environment for all to enjoy.
Morton started planting trees in the 1800s for the beauty they provide and to improve the environment. Since then, we’ve learned much more about their positive impact on the environment and how they enhance the beauty and value of our homes. According to Treepeople.org, the environmental benefits include absorbing carbon dioxide to help with climate change, cleaning the air by absorbing pollutants and giving off oxygen. When planted next to our homes, they provide a cooling effect in the summer which can help us cut air conditioning costs, help save water and prevent soil erosion. And these benefits don’t even address the beauty they provide. We think Morton left the world with an annual reminder of the critical importance of trees that is even more important today. We hope you celebrate Arbor Day by choosing to plant a beautiful tree in your own outdoor living space.
