Spring has taken its time getting to the Chicago area this year, but it has finally arrived!  You may have noticed bits of green peeking through your plant beds already.  Now is the perfect time to give your landscape a good clean-up for the growing season.

Damage caused by last year’s drought should be addressed now.  Brown spots on lawns and thinning shrubs and trees are good indications that your landscape needs some extra care this spring.  Last summer’s extreme dry conditions can also breed disease, which needs to be treated quickly.  Add to that this year’s cool, wet spring, and you have the perfect conditions for fungi to thrive, resulting in even more damage.   Proper maintenance of your landscape is great for damage control.  And it’s a great time to plan for new plantings of shrubs, trees and perennials.

Spring clean-up starts with clearing away all dead or diseased plant material.  Shrubs and trees will benefit from a good trimming.  Next, a fresh top dressing of mulch, some top seeding of the lawn where needed, and a thorough pruning will give your yard the boost it needs.  You’ll be rewarded with a beautiful, healthy place to spend those long summer days.

Give Mom a gift that lasts all year – a gift certificate for an addition to her garden or landscape.  A new tree, shrub, or addition to the hardscape is sure to make mom smile whenever she sees it!
